Fire Alarm Foolishness

OK... so being in our new house has been absolutely wonderful! We have been searching many different places to add to our furniture collection at a reasonable rate. Ed really wanted to have a roll top desk like his moms, so we searched Craig's list and picked up one VERY cheap!!! It came apart in three pieces for ease of moving and we finally got it into our room not long ago. The problem was that we had to empty the current office area of boxes, the current desk, etc.. before this "Big Daddy" could be placed in it's permanent home. In the meantime, the entire rolltop portion of the desk was put at the foot of our bed, on the rug, because it is the only rug upstairs right now. Not a big deal... until... one night at 4:37....

THE FIRE ALARM GOES OFF IN THE HOUSE!!!!!! *The fire alarm that is hard wired into the house.** Thank goodness Ed was off on that night because I would have just about died... hey wait.... I almost did!!! OK, not really, but it sure felt like it!

I jump out of bed in the, "Oh my goodness, I have to get four kids right out of the house before they die." mode. Guess who didn't think about the big honkin' desk at the foot of the bed???? Yep.. Grace herself!!! Imagine said woman running full steam into the corner of the desk and rolling over, around.. Oh, I don' t know how it happened! All I know is that I ended up on the opposite side of the desk laying on the floor with intense leg pain! My lovely husband says "Oh, Honey!" I yell, "Hon, the alarm!" He yells, "I hear it!!!" After only 5 or 6 "buzzes", the alarm stopped!!!! We look at each other, calm down two children *BECAUSE THE OTHER TWO SLEPT THROUGH THE ALARM!!!!!!!! and run around the house hyperventilating while trying to smell smoke, electric... something that would cause the alarm to go off.

We smell nothing.

We see nothing.

We clear the house. We chalk it up to a fluke that we would be dealing with in the morning. Nolan and Nevada jump in our bed. Ed goes on the computer in the office in our room. I lay with the kids. I calm down enough to feel my eyes drooping... drifting off to slumber land when...

BUZZ BUZZZ BUZZZ begins again! Ed and I jump up and continue walking through the house like Bloodhounds trying to figure out what is happening! Still, no luck. I tell Ed we should get call an electrician, but 5AM probably was not a great time. He agreeed.

At this point, I can't sleep. I go into the sun room and turn on the TV. Wouldn't you know, the alarm sounds again.

Ed comes down to do another house check. As he is walking down the stairs, the alarm sounds again... on the CARBON MONOXIDE detector in stairwell between the upstairs and down.... Ed looks at the lcd.... and he sees a big whopping LB flashing. Darn low battery! Can these things please wait until a decent hour to tell us we need new batteries????

Funny now... can laugh.... NOT then!

So, Ed changes the battery. I turn on the news. Relax enough to doze and don't you know there is....

"BUZZZ BUZZZZ BUZZZZ THIS IS A TEST OF THE EMERGENCY BROADCASTING SYSTEM...."
on the TV!

Scared the living everything out of me.

Yes.... me and my softball sized bruised leg got up and started doing some laundry at that point! :)
