The dining was delich... yummy.... ok, it was camp food. Not horrible, just takes a long time to feed 300 people. I am still trying to get the "We are table #1, #1,..." chant out of my head. It became a favorite of our table because the boys could bang on the table. This was also camp song time... Father Abraham, We're alive, awake, alert, enthusiastic, There was a bear etc... Ed is getting frustrated when I announce at the end of our dinner "All but the waiters, DISMISSED!"
The activities included:
Boating: Nolan wanted to go on a paddle boat with a friend. His mother agreed to go... awww shucks!!! Paddling around the lake for 30 minutes with two giggling boys who wanted to switch seats and were tired after about 30 seconds... Sorry Mrs. T!
Swimming: who wouldn't love taking a dip in the ice cold lake... the water so cold because it is a fresh water spring fed lake and the temperature was 68 degrees... to earn her blue wristband so she could swim with her son in the blue area with the fun dock to jump off. Problem...said child only earned his white band and could only stay in the 3 feet or under water! (Nolan did too much doggy paddling between front crawl strokes during his test.) OK, I do have to gloat a little bit because God knows I am not the most "in shape" person in the world... by far, but as I was swimming, a rather macho, in shape type guy stopped after two laps and said how much more do I have. I told him he had two more laps to do and he gave up. Heee Heee HA! (Lisa, if you look real close you can see the slide in the white area. The red area is the split in the dock right behind the slide. The blue area is further out.) After all that swimming, testing etc... Nolan was content playing in the sand. HMMMMMMM!
Nature: "Nature Mary" is a sweet lady who loves to teach conservation and wildlife to anyone who will listen. Nolan loved visiting her and all of her pets. He held a gerbil for the first time and held a parrot as well. He stopped at the snake...
BMX Trail: This was new this year... a trail through the woods on bikes... up hills, down hills, over roots, little ramps made of gravel, some mud... truly a little boy haven!!! Nolan LOVED this!! He wants one at home. Ummm Honey, one problem, we have no trees in our yard! Bummer!
Gotta LOVE that face! Pure joy!
The boys totally psyched to participate in the BMX trail!
Crafts: Typically not a favorite of Nolan's, but they used a saw and a drill to make their own tic tac toe boards. Ended up being a hit!
BB Guns: Nolan lying in the prone position. (See, wasn't I a good listener?) Nolan practiced on two boards and then decided to shoot for "score". He had to shoot a total point score of 40 points to earn his USA Junior Shooters patch. Well, he shot 45 of 50 possible points. He's learning to shoot a gun so well. Hmmm, is that something I should be proud of?????
Archery: A favorite as well. Once we got the instructions, Nolan was consistently hitting the target. I told him I was going to take a picture and he needed to hit the bulls-eye. Yes, he did it on command!
Cub Skills: Fire building... learned about tinder, kindling, sticks, logs, log cabin, teepee, lean-to. flint, and birch bark. No need to start a fire with a roll of toilet paper like we did at camp last year. (Note, this was day 4. Cubs were EXHAUSTED!!!!) It does look like my child is a having a LOT of fun. He is a bit of a fire bug!)
The one thing I wished I got pictures of was the Webelo I overnighter. If I could paint a picture for you... Picture a group of pine trees with dead needles on the ground underneath. A blue tarp strung up between the trees, tilted so the water would run off the tarp should it rain. Underneath was a brown tarp and under that brown tarp was the biggest darn tree root EVER!!! That darn tree root was directly under my rib cage the ENTIRE night. Talk about deep bone bruises... I got em! The funniest thing was lying wide awake in the pitch dark listening to snoring men all over the place. It sounded like grizzly bears growling... and then, every so often you would hear the loudest toot ever. It was unbelievable. I was literally laughing out loud. All I have to say is thank goodness we were outside. Holy... not sure what those men ate, but my o my.... funny stuff.
Can't wait until next year when we get to hike up a huge hill, over a mile, to camp under the stars. :)
